An 18 year old young woman named Mangli decided to marry a local stray dog. The rather bizarre ritual took place in India at a small village located in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. The ceremony was rather lavish and organized by village elders to ward off the bad luck she might face in life. It is believed that this young woman is cursed and marrying a man would bring further destruction to her family and community.

The dogs name is Sheru and will be a faithful companion to her. At least this is what is believed. By her doing this, she will lift any curses bestowed upon her family—bringing them good fortunes. She was hesitant at first, then the idea grew upon her.

Mangli said: “I am marrying a dog because the village elders believe that my evil spell will be passed on to the dog”. “My villagers say that many girls like me have followed this ritual and they have gotten rid of their evil spells and are living happy lives now”.

Her father Sri Amnmunda said: “The village elders told us that we should organize the wedding as soon as we can. We had to make sure that the evil spell is destroyed”.

This is not the first time this ritual has happened in this small village. Weddings with girls marrying dogs are not uncommon. The canines are dressed in the same garments which a human groom would wear. Mangli will be permitted to marry once the evil spell or spirit is destroyed being passed onto the dog.

The dog was treated just as a man would be during the ceremony, money was spent to include everything that would take place in an actual wedding tradition. After the ceremony, Mangli will take care of the dog raising it as a pet. She also said: “I will a man one day. It is the dream of every girl to marry a prince charming. So, I am waiting for my prince”.
