The Ancient City Of Tiahuanaco

As time has passed things have changed considerably around the world. In one spot located in western Bolivia in South America, stands a most unusual formation of stone carvings and ruins. It is known as the ancient city of Tiahuanaco. It is estimated to be around 17,000 years old and very intriguing for its design and layout among the masses.

What is known about this area is that is was once a great empire that reached across the span of time into present-day Peru and Chile. It existed from AD 300 to AD 1000. Tiwanaku is considered by scholars as one of the most important civilizations of the Inca Empire. Pedro Cieza de León a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru first recorded a four part book series (the remaining sections were not published until the 19th and 20th centuries) documenting the existence of this civilization.

Tiwanaku’s name is related to the Aymara term taypiqala, which means “stone in the center”. This is the modern day used name. The area around Tiwanaku may have been inhabited as early as 1500 BC. The ancient ones apparently built a stone pyramid known as the Akapana. Upon its discovery, it was covered deep in the ground. As the excavation continued, various walls have been exposed and treasure hunters have opened a depression at the top.

The enormous stones which have fallen (once used to build this massive city) now lay scattered about the area. These stones are a modern day technological marvel from the distance they were constructed to where they are now. They have traveled over fifty miles from their original destination in a mountainous quarry.

The proximity of the stones to Lake Titicaca is quite close and they are 13,000 feet above sea level. Its shoreline is littered with massive amounts of fossilized seashells. Most of the marine life remains are found in salt water areas.

This leads many to speculate that this area was once a seaport of some sort. Among the ruined area traces of docks, can be found demonstrating a much earlier shoreline. These docks could have had hundreds of sea-going vessels traveling through them.
